The border between Malaysia and Thailand is a hive of activity, with tourism and commerce thriving.
Some people frequently cross the border just to go shopping, so it’s not uncommon to see someone carrying a box along the border fence.
However, what’s inside the box could sometimes be something illegal.
So, were the police recently able to catch a man carrying a large quantity of ganja along the Malaysia-Thailand border?
Verdict:
TRUE
According to a report from Bernama, police caught a man attempting to smuggle 16kg of ganja valued at RM49,600 into the country, approximately 100m from the Malaysia-Thailand border during Ops Tapis Khas near Kampung Melayu at 7.20am on Jan 24.
Perlis deputy police chief SAC Baderulhisham Baharudin conveyed that the 23-year-old local man was apprehended following intelligence and surveillance concerning smuggling at the Malaysia-Thailand border.
“Police spotted a man walking about 100m from the Malaysia-Thailand border fence with a box in his hand. When he saw the police, the suspect discarded the box and attempted to flee along the border but we were able to catch him,” he stated during a press conference at the Padang Besar police headquarters on Friday (Jan 26), adding that the box contained 16 slabs of ganja.
