For many people, public transportation is their main way of getting around. Traditionally, trains have been fueled by diesel-electric or electricity, which can have negative effects on air quality.

But is it really true that the railways in the Netherlands are completely powered by wind energy?

    VERDICT:

    TRUE

Indeed, about nine years ago, the Dutch railway operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen partnered with energy company Eneco to introduce sustainable energy into its operations. This collaboration has resulted in all-electric trains in the Netherlands running solely on wind energy.

This commitment to environmentally friendly practices is part of the country’s larger initiative to create a more sustainable future and address the pressing issue of climate change.

But how does this actually work? Wind energy is first converted into kinetic energy, which is then transformed into power to generate electricity for the trains.

A single windmill has the capacity to power a train for more than 193 kilometers, enabling approximately 600,000 passengers to travel each day without any emissions.

Reports indicate that this shift to wind energy has significantly reduced carbon emissions associated with the use of natural gas and coal, as well as decreased air pollution in the region.
