PETALING JAYA: The Hollywood Walk of Fame is known around the world for honouring luminaries from the entertainment industry.
Spanning a range of categories like film, TV, radio, music, and theatre, each star symbolises a significant contribution. But has a superhero that began on the pages of comic books recently received such a tribute?
VERDICT:
TRUE
The Dark Knight – better known as Batman – was awarded a star on the Walk of Fame on September 26, making him the 2,790th recipient since the first ceremony in 1958.
Batman’s accolade falls under the Motion Pictures category, celebrating his long-standing impact on the silver screen.
Comic enthusiasts first encountered Batman in Detective Comics on March 30, 1939, when he was initially known as the “Bat-Man”
Since then, Bruce Wayne – the man behind the cowl – swiftly became a cultural staple as the masked vigilante.
While Batman is the inaugural superhero to receive this accolade from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, he is not the first fictional character to do so as Mickey Mouse secured that milestone in 1978.
Interestingly, the award ceremony was held shortly after Batman Day 2024, which, on September 21 this year, marked the 85th anniversary of the Gotham City hero.
This distinction also secures Batman a spot in the Guinness World Records as the first superhero to earn a Walk of Fame star. Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief at Guinness World Records, remarked: “Batman is one of our most recognisable and loved cultural icons…”
Beyond the character himself, individual contributors to the Batman legacy like the late Adam West and Burt Ward, who starred as Batman and Robin in the 60s TV series, as well as creator Bob Kane, have all been previously honoured with stars on the Walk of Fame.
For those intrigued by this piece of superhero trivia, sharing it with another comic book fan could just make their day.
