WHEN it comes to politicians and world leaders, few are as closely linked to the whole buzz around unidentified aerial phenomena and unidentified flying objects – UFOs – like those of the United States.

Indeed, from the dawn of the modern era of the UFO in the 1940s to the present day, those holding the most powerful political office in the US have found themselves having to distance themselves from anything linked to theories about strange beings from other worlds.

That said, it has been claimed over the years that the now 100-year-old Jimmy Carter is the only US President to have ever gone on record with his UFO sighting – even filing a full report on it.

    Is this true?

    Verdict:

    TRUE

This is indeed true; Carter lodged a report with the non-profit International UFO Bureau in 1971 when he was the Governor of Georgia, where he put down details of an object he saw at a Lions Club dinner back in 1969.

According to the information in the report, Carter said he saw the UFO at about 7.15pm in Oct 1969 and described it as being round and changing colours during the 10-15 minutes of the sighting.

This is something he later recounted when asked by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer in a November 2007 interview for the network’s Situation Room show.

“Back when I was a peanut farmer and a head of a lounge club in southwest Georgia, I and about 25 others saw something in the air that changed colours; it was round and came and left,” said Carter.

He added that he and the other witnesses could not figure out what it was.

“It was unidentified as far as we were concerned, and in my opinion I think it’s impossible – and some people disagree – to have space people from other planets or stars to come and visit us. I don’t think that’s possible,” said Carter.
