It’s often said that things happen “in the blink of an eye.” Blinking is a rapid movement that human beings are capable of making. We don’t even see the brief darkness caused by blinking.
Even more interesting is the fact that women tend to blink twice as often as men. But is this really true?
Verdict:
TRUE
In 2008, research conducted at the Functional Anatomy Research Center in Milan, Italy actually confirmed that women do blink significantly more than men.
The study used optoelectronic motion analysers to monitor spontaneous eyelid movements involved 13 men, 12 women aged 20 to 30 years, and 10 men and nine women aged over 50.
It concluded that women blink 19 times per minute compared to men’s 11 times per minute. It also found that women blink faster than men, and older women blink more frequently than younger women.
The consensus among most researchers is that women may blink more due to having more oestrogen in their systems.
Blinking is an almost involuntary action that helps clean, moisturize, and protect our eyes from irritants and dust particles. The rate of blinking can vary based on concentration, stress, or even emotion.
