Many of us have probably experienced the urge of tossing our phones – out of sheer frustration, mostly.
On top of this, memes and jokes abound about how indestructible some mobile phones manufactured in Finland can be.
With this said, is it true that mobile phone throwing has been a sport in this Scandinavian nation since the start of the 21st Century?
VERDICT:
TRUE
As peculiar as it may sound, yes!
The “Mobile Phone Throwing Championship” began in the Finnish town of Savolina in 2000 and now takes place annually in August.
It began as a national event and has since gained the attention of people from across the globe.
The sport allows its participants to release pent-up emotions through the act of flinging phones, and countries such as the United States, Belgium and Austria began to pick up the sport, too.
Each participant will be provided with a phone, which they have to hurl as far as possible; they will be judged by the distance the object flies before it lands.
Belgian athlete Dries Feremans holds the Guinness World Record throw of 110.4m — the length of a football field — during the 2014 competition.
