TODAY, cities and towns globally are overflowing with vacation accommodation that caters to the growing number of tourists visiting these destinations.

Some promote themed accommodations, offering guests a unique stay experience.

And when it comes to themed accommodations, was a prison in Latvia turned into a hotel where the guests are treated like convicts?

    Verdict:

    TRUE

Yes! As outlandish as it may sound, curious travellers can experience this at the Karosta Prison.

This quiet Latvian neighbourhood was formerly a Russian Imperial and Soviet naval base in the 20th Century, and after decades of housing convicts, the military prison was abandoned and then later turned into a “hotel”, which also doubles as a museum by day.

The original structure is retained to preserve its history.

Here, guests get a rare experience of being in jail. They will be “punished” by prison guards (hotel employees) for misconduct, interrogated and lastly, locked in a “cell”, with a mattress on the floor.

When night falls, the experience gets even more surreal, as it is said that the place is also home to the spirits of inmates who died in the prison.

During the day, visitors can take a guided tour to explore the old complex.
