A MAN is seen approaching a mosque donation box on CCTV footage that is being circulated on social media.

Instead of putting in a contribution, however, he starts trying to break into the locked box.

The would-be thief, clad in dark clothing and wearing a motorcycle helmet, is even seen whipping out a handheld grinder at one point to use on the padlock.

It is said that the attempt took place in Kota Tinggi, Johor.

Did this happen there as claimed?

    VERDICT:

    TRUE

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said the incident occurred at Kampung Felda Bukit Ramun on Thursday (Sept 5).

The suspect was unsuccessful in his attempt to cut the padlock with the grinder, he added.

“The mosque’s imam then lodged a police report.

“No money was stolen but efforts are ongoing to track down the suspect,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Sept 11).

Supt Yusof added that the case was being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief resulting in loss or damage.

He urged those with information to contact the nearest police station.
