Parents often give their children names that reflect their hopes and dreams for their future. But in the case of Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, it seems his mother’s maiden name may have foreshadowed his legendary destiny.
Marion Moon was Buzz Aldrin’s mother’s maiden name, a strangely fitting name for the woman who raised a son who would go on to be the second person to walk on the moon, following Neil Armstrong.
But is this remarkable coincidence actually true? Aldrin himself confirmed it to be so.
Verdict:
TRUE
In a social media post commemorating Mother’s Day in 2017, the then 94-year-old Aldrin paid tribute to his late mother by sharing this fascinating tidbit.
He wrote, “My mother’s maiden name was Marion Moon, so pioneering was my destiny. Best mother a boy could hope for. In my heart forever.”
Regrettably, Marion Moon never had the chance to witness her son achieve his destined feat.
She passed away shortly before Aldrin and Armstrong made history by landing on the moon on July 20, 1969.
