Fun fairs are a popular destination for people of all ages, offering a variety of exciting activities such as amusement rides, delicious food, and games that can create lasting memories. However, a recent incident in Kota Kinabalu has shed light on the potential dangers of these attractions. Reports surfaced about a couple who suffered serious injuries after being thrown off a ride at a local fun fair, raising concerns about safety standards at such events.

According to Sabah Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Hamsa Isnurdini, the incident involved a man and a woman, identified as Junaidah Tarasan, who were riding the “Octopus” attraction when it suddenly detached from the main machine on Wednesday, March 6.
The Octopus ride features small chairs connected to spinning arms that extend from a central point.
Hamsa disclosed that they received a distress call regarding the incident in Likas around 9pm.
“The woman sustained head injuries, while the man’s condition is more severe,” he stated in a release.
Both individuals were promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where the man remains in critical condition.
An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
Kota Kinabalu OCPD Asst Comm Zaidi Abdullah revealed that the Sabah Police Commissioner has instructed the fun fair operator to halt operations for a safety assessment of all rides.
“Once all safety protocols are implemented and the rides are deemed safe, they may resume operations,” he explained.
