Confirming the reports, Customs Department deputy director-general (Enforcement/Compliance) Datuk Sazali Mohamad revealed that raids were conducted at three premises in Petaling Jaya and Klang. During the raids, 14.6kg of dates with an estimated value of RM678 were seized.
“The raid was prompted by a video circulating on social media alleging that several shops were selling dates of Israeli origin,” stated Sazali. The seized dates were declared as food items upon entry, and were labeled as “Organic Jumbo Medjool Dates” in 73 boxes.
It was discovered that the dates were first brought into Europe before being distributed to Malaysia and other countries. The investigation unveiled that the dates arrived in Malaysia in 2022 along with other food items, all repackaged for sale.
Sazali informed reporters that a man in his 40s, believed to be the owner of the business selling the dates, was detained during the operation. He emphasized that any product originating from Israel must have a special permit from the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (Miti).
Further action against individuals found selling similar products is not ruled out, according to Sazali. Those with information on such products are encouraged to reach out to the Customs Department through their toll-free hotline or visit the nearest office, with the assurance of confidentiality for informants.
