A video clip circulating on social media and messaging platforms has sparked controversy. The video allegedly shows pigs and chickens being bred on the same farm, leading to questions about regulatory compliance.
Now, let’s examine the accuracy of the video.
Verdict:
TRUE
The Penang Veterinary Services Department (DVS) has conducted an investigation into the video and has provided its findings.
A joint operation by DVS and the Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) at the farm on Tuesday (July 11) confirmed that both pigs and chickens were being raised in the same location.
According to DVS, the farm was registered with them but did not possess a valid operating license. It was found to be non-compliant with regulations regarding cages and the discharge of effluents.
DVS stated, “As a result, a notice to vacate and cease operations was issued to the farm.”
In addition, a compound notice of RM7,500 was issued, with potential penalties of up to RM30,000 in fines or three years’ imprisonment at the discretion of the deputy public prosecutor.
It was discovered that the farm had violated the Pig Farming Licensing (Penang) Regulations 2020, which strictly prohibits the breeding of other animal species on pig farms.
Furthermore, investigations revealed that the chickens from the farm were exclusively sold in non-Muslim markets and not sent to any slaughterhouses or other locations.
DVS has appealed to the public to refrain from circulating the video to prevent unnecessary alarm among the population.
