It is a commonly held belief that the bond between siblings is incredibly strong. Recently, claims surfaced online that a pair of siblings were arrested as burglary suspects after a man deposited a large sum of money into bank accounts belonging to his sister.

    Is this statement accurate?

    VERDICT:

    TRUE

A pair of siblings indeed were arrested for a burglary in Sabah after the brother deposited nearly half of the stolen money into bank accounts belonging to his sister.

The brother, who is in his 20s, was apprehended by police on November 7th as a suspect in a series of housebreakings in the state capital and the southwestern Beaufort district.

Beaufort police chief Deputy Supt Ismail Abdullah stated that they suspect the man was involved in a burglary in the district on November 5th, resulting in losses of approximately RM78,000.

“After investigating, we discovered the suspect had transferred the proceeds from the burglary into several accounts belonging to his family member,” he said in a statement.

After questioning the man, a team from the Sabah police contingent, along with Beaufort CID personnel, brought in the sister, who is in her 30s, as they believed she was the owner of the bank accounts.

DSP Ismail mentioned that cash totaling RM30,320 was confiscated during the investigation.

“The woman has been detained for seven days from November 9 for an investigation under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking,” he said.

The younger brother, he added, was also in the custody of Kota Kinabalu police for investigations into numerous house burglaries.
