The Deputy Health Minister, Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni, has urged dog and cat owners in Sarawak to ensure that their pets are vaccinated against rabies. The ministry is concerned about the high number of rabies cases in Sarawak compared to other states. Awang Sauni stated that the rabies situation in Sarawak is alarming, with 75 cases recorded since 2020. This year alone, there have been 17 new cases and 15 fatalities. In contrast, the situation on the peninsula, particularly Selangor, is more under control, with only three cases reported in the past three years.
Awang Sauni made these comments during a press conference at the launch of the Health Ministry’s national sports carnival held at Mount Austin stadium in Johor Baru on October 26.
The Sarawak government has implemented preventive measures, including a vaccination program for pets conducted by the Veterinary Department. Pet owners can register their animals and obtain vaccination injections at a counter set up by the department in collaboration with local authorities. Stray animals will also receive immunizations if a complaint is made, as they often move in groups and can enter residential areas. The aim is to prevent attacks and bites on humans, particularly the elderly and children. Regular efforts are required to combat rabies effectively.
