Coalition leaders have criticized the recent raid conducted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on a legal firm that represents Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, stating that it is an abuse of power. Muhyiddin himself has labeled the raid on the offices of Rosli Dahlan Saravana (RDS) as an abuse of power by the anti-graft agency.
During a ceramah in Pelangai on October 6th, Muhyiddin called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to halt the intimidation directed towards opposition leaders and focus on improving the country’s economy instead. He further questioned the purpose of the MACC raid on his lawyer’s office, claiming it indicated that something was about to happen and expressed his belief that this is an abuse of power by certain individuals.
Bersatu supreme council member Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah echoed this sentiment, asserting that lawyers are officers of the court protected by law as they bear the responsibility of upholding justice. Saifuddin accused the MACC of employing their power as a tool to abuse the legal system through a series of miscarriages of justice against Muhyiddin.
According to him, this abuse of power against a lawyer tasked with defending a client and striving to maintain justice represents a dark period in the country’s justice system.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed on Friday that an investigation targeting a lawyer involved in the government’s efforts to recover assets of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) had taken place. He stated that the lawyer in question, along with several other individuals, is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorist Financing and Illicit Proceeds Act 2001.
Muhyiddin’s personal lawyer, Rosli, claimed that the MACC carried out the raid on his law firm at 10:30 am. He reported that 12 MACC officers requested investigative powers to access the entire office of Rosli Dahlan Saravana (RDS) law firm.
