GEORGE TOWN: In a surprising turn of events, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh secured top spot in the Penang DAP elections with 1,247 votes.

His brother Jagdeep Singh Deo, who is also Penang Deputy Chief Minister II, did not make the cut.

Human Resources Minister Steven Sim, who was the early favourite, came in second with 1,237 votes.

Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying, however, only finished 12th with 827 votes.

Two former state executive committee members – Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin and Datuk Soon Lip Chee – also made the 15-member list. Yeoh won third spot with 1,225 votes and Soon came in 11th with 853 votes.

Other notable names who made the line-up were state exco members Zairil Khir Johari (fourth, 1,166 votes), Daniel Gooi (fifth, 1,133), H’ng Mooi Lye (seventh, 1,074) and Lim Siew Khim (10th, 870).

Two newcomers, Pulau Tikus assemblyman Joshua Woo and Sungai Puyu assemblyman Phee Syn Tze, also did remarkably well. Woo and Phee finished in eighth and ninth spots with 1,047 and 886 votes respectively.

Phee’s uncle Boon Chee also made the line-up with 812 votes to end up in 13th spot.

A total of 1,452 voters voted for 31 candidates who contested for 15 seats during the Penang DAP Ordinary Convention held at Setia Spice Arena in Bayan Lepas here on Sunday (Sept 22).

Those who did not make the cut were Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo (503 votes) and Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai (340).
