KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested a retired government officer suspected of soliciting and receiving bribes totalling RM16,000 to expedite a land transfer in the Tawau district.

According to an MACC source, the suspect, in his 60s, was arrested at around 10.30am on Tuesday (Oct 15) after providing a statement at its Tawau branch.

“Initial investigations revealed the suspect is believed to have solicited and received bribes to speed up the transfer of a 12-acre (9.53ha) plot of land in Tawau,” the source said.

Sabah MACC director Datuk S Karunanithy confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 165 of the Penal Code.

He added that the suspect will be charged at the Tawau Special Corruption Sessions Court on Wednesday (Oct 16).
