PUTRAJAYA: The Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced that the government has dedicated RM725.7 million to the Flood Mitigation (RTB) project to tackle the flood issue in the Dengkil area up to Labohan Dagang.
Nik Azmi said the project is part of a long-term strategy under the High Priority Flood Mitigation (TBBT) and will involve Sungai Langat Phase 1 and Sungai Langat Phase 2 to address the flood problems that have been affecting about 120,000 residents in the area.
The implementation of the Sungai Langat Phase 1 RTB Project is currently in the process of acquiring the site and is expected to be completed in 2027, while the Sungai Langat Phase 2 RTB project is expected to start in January 2024 and completed by 2030, according to Nik Azmi.
“To address the issue in the short-term, the maintenance of the drainage system in the area will be carried out more frequently,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Nov 11).
Nik Azmi issued the statement during his working visit to various flood-affected areas and the Semarang River tidal gate.
On Nov 5 last year, continuous heavy rain for an hour resulted in flooding in areas such as Kampung Sungai Buah, Kampung Jenderam Hilir, Kampung Cemperai, Kampung Seri Tanjung, Taman Delima, Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Melut, FT29/FT32 Intersection and at Jalan Utama Taman Warisan Suria. According to Bernama, about 148 houses with a total of 395 residents were evacuated to several relief centres due to the floods.
