LUSAKA, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) — The police in southern Zambia’s Chirundu District have confirmed that five individuals lost their lives and one was injured in a road accident on Wednesday. The accident involved a car and a truck and occurred when the car driver failed to stay on their side of the road and collided with the oncoming truck, according to a statement by Danny Mwale, the deputy spokesperson for the Zambia Police Service.

According to Mwale, five passengers in the car, including a two-month-old baby, sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead upon arrival at a local hospital. The truck driver, on the other hand, survived the accident but suffered injuries.

Mwale also stated that the car sustained significant damage, while the front part of the truck was extensively damaged as well.

The causes of fatal road accidents in Zambia are typically attributed to careless driving, poor road conditions, and overloading. As per police records, in the third quarter of 2023, the country encountered 9,888 road accidents, resulting in 581 fatalities and 1,719 serious injuries.
