ADDIS ABABA, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) — According to local officials, a road accident in Ethiopia’s Oromia Region resulted in the death of eight people. The incident took place in the Kelam Welega Zone on Monday morning when a midibus collided with a truck. The news was reported by state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC).
The police reported that in addition to the deaths, four individuals sustained serious and light injuries in the accident. The injured are currently being treated at nearby health facilities.
Local officials have also stated that in a separate incident on Friday, six students lost their lives when a bus overturned in the northern region of Tigray.
Despite Ethiopia having one of the lowest per capita car ownership rates worldwide, deadly traffic accidents are unfortunately common. Factors contributing to these accidents are often attributed to poor road conditions, reckless driving, lack of safety rule enforcement, and an inadequate system for issuing driving licenses.
