KUALA LUMPUR: With a starting salary of only RM1,441 per month, new police personnel are considered part of the B40 group, which means they belong to the urban poor community, according to Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain.

The director of Bukit Aman CID expressed concern that the situation is even worse for recruits sent to major cities like Kuala Lumpur.

“Their salary scale is extremely low. The salary for a constable is only RM1,441. When allowances are added, it totals to RM1,800.

“However, after deductions, their take-home pay is only RM1,500. Can you survive with such a salary in Kuala Lumpur? We also need to consider other expenses such as medical costs, especially if there is a disabled child,” he said in a video shown to CID chiefs nationwide at Universiti Sains Malaysia recently.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily highlighted cases of policemen who refused transfers due to concerns about burdening their families.

“Someone approached me explaining that he had to decline a promotion because his wife is paralyzed and his two children have cerebral palsy.

“He mentioned that he has to carry them every morning, attend to their needs, and get them ready before going to work.

“Despite being paralyzed from the waist down, his wife still cooks nasi lemak for him to sell at the office while his allowance is used to cover the family’s medical expenses,” he added.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily emphasized that the policeman fears he won’t have enough time for his family if he is promoted.

As the CID director, Comm Mohd Shuhaily pledged to address all logistical issues, including welfare and asset concerns.

He also reminded all CID chiefs to carefully review transfer applications instead of simply supporting or rejecting them.
