Rugby Australia (RA) has officially confirmed that Eddie Jones has resigned as coach of the Wallabies. The announcement comes after Jones disclosed to The Australian newspaper on Sunday that he had agreed to the terms of his exit with RA. This decision comes less than two weeks after he had previously stated that he would fulfill his contract and lead the Wallabies to the 2027 World Cup on home soil.

“Rugby Australia thanks Eddie for his commitment to the Wallabies in 2023 and wishes him the best in his future endeavors,” RA stated. They further mentioned that updates regarding the future coaching staff of the Wallabies will be announced in the near future.

RA boss Phil Waugh will be hosting a media conference today at 2 p.m. local time (0300 GMT) to discuss further details.

Previously appointed in January, Jones heavily anticipated leading a young Wallabies squad to the World Cup in France. However, the team’s journey came to an end in the group stage, marking the first time this has happened in their history.

Since Jones’ resignation, there has been significant criticism of RA’s leadership. This criticism stems from the decision to terminate former Wallabies coach Dave Rennie’s contract prematurely to appoint Jones.

RA Chairman Hamish McLennan, responding to the criticism, stated that he would not step down in light of Jones’ inability to revive the team. McLennan instead attributed the Wallabies’ struggles to the nation’s “rugby system.”
