(Reuters) – Beauden Barrett, who has been named World Player of the Year twice, has signed a new contract that will keep him with the All Blacks through the 2027 World Cup. The 32-year-old is currently playing in Japan for Toyota Verblitz but will return to New Zealand next year to be available for selection. He will also play for the Auckland-based Blues in Super Rugby starting in 2025, according to a statement from New Zealand Rugby (NZR) on Monday.

In the statement, Barrett expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to continue representing the All Blacks, saying, “It’s a huge privilege to put on the black jersey and one I will never take for granted.” He has been a key player for the All Blacks since his debut in 2012, scoring 734 points and 43 tries in 123 tests and contributing to the team’s 2015 World Cup win in England. He was also part of the starting 15 in the All Blacks’ recent World Cup final loss to South Africa.

Robertson, the new head coach of the All Blacks, praised Barrett’s skills and experience, calling him “the second most-capped All Black back in history for a reason” and emphasizing the value of having Barrett’s knowledge and loyalty on the team. Barrett’s decision to remain with the team is seen as a major win for Robertson as he works to rebuild the All Blacks’ squad following the retirement of several key players.

Barrett’s return to New Zealand and commitment to the national team is significant for both the All Blacks and Super Rugby, as he will bring his expertise and leadership to both levels of competition. His presence is expected to have a positive impact on the development of younger players and the overall performance of the teams he is part of.
