In Sydney, tickets for the British & Irish Lions tour next year are now available for purchase in Australia despite the uncertainty surrounding one of the fixtures, the Melbourne Rebels, who are at risk of being disbanded at the end of the season. The Super Rugby team is currently in administration with significant debts, and Rugby Australia (RA) is assessing their future, with the only guarantee being that the club will finish the current Super Rugby Pacific campaign.

RA’s chief executive Phil Waugh acknowledged that the review process for the Rebels’ future is taking longer than expected but assured that the Lions will still have a game in Melbourne on July 22 next year.

“While we navigate through the Rebels situation, there will still be a match in Melbourne on that date,” Waugh informed the Australian Associated Press in Melbourne. “We have discussed the possibility of a Pasifika game or featuring Australia A, among other options, but the current plan is to have the Rebels team compete.”

Joe Schmidt, the new head coach of the Wallabies, has the responsibility of preparing Australia, currently ranked 10th globally, for the upcoming tests against the Lions in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney in July and August next year. Schmidt mentioned that the process of revitalizing a team that struggled in recent years is in its early stages.

“I am focused on resetting and establishing a solid foundation for future development,” Schmidt stated to reporters in Sydney. “I have set a foundation period for myself. The early signs are promising, and the conversations with Super Rugby coaches have been positive, showing progress.”

When the Lions last toured Australia in 2013, Schmidt was coaching Ireland and he later passed on the role to his defense coach Andy Farrell in 2019. Farrell, who recently led Ireland to a second consecutive Six Nations title, will be leading the Lions in Australia next year.

Schmidt expressed confidence in the Lions’ strength but believes that with the right strategy, the Wallabies can compete successfully against them. “It is about establishing a process for our approach,” Schmidt emphasized. “If we can implement this strategy over the next four months and beyond with the national team, it will enable us to be competitive with the Lions.”

The anticipation is high for an exciting tour presence in Australia next year, with the Lions making their mark once again. The Wallabies, under Schmidt’s guidance, aim to rise to the challenge and give a formidable performance against the seasoned Lions squad. The rugby community eagerly awaits the showdown between these two renowned teams.

As preparations continue and plans unfold, the Australian rugby scene is buzzing with enthusiasm for what promises to be a thrilling series of matches. Fans are gearing up to witness top-quality rugby action as the Lions take on the Wallabies in what is sure to be a fiercely competitive encounter. The stage is set for an epic showdown that will captivate rugby enthusiasts across the globe.
