Two massive World Cup quarter-finals took place in Paris this weekend, resulting in wins for New Zealand against Ireland and South Africa against France. While Ireland has never advanced past the quarter-finals in the World Cup, the All Blacks have won the tournament three times. France had been hoping for their first World Cup victory, supported by the home crowd, but South Africa, also three-time champions, prevailed in their first knockout match under the leadership of coach Fabien Galthie. The nations with a proven track record of World Cup success displayed more confidence and self-belief in their matches.

South African coach Jacques Nienaber acknowledged the close margins, with only one point separating the teams in the Springboks’ 29-28 victory. Nienaber credited his players’ experience and ability to find solutions during the game. The first half saw a thrilling exchange of three tries from each side, with France attempting to break through South Africa’s defense. However, South Africa relied on their tried and tested style of play, a strategy that has previously led them to World Cup victories.

Handre Pollard, the man who secured South Africa’s World Cup triumph four years ago, made a significant impact as he entered the game. His long-range penalty ultimately made the difference in the outcome. Faf de Klerk, the scrumhalf, and formidable forwards were also introduced, shifting the game towards a more direct style of play that has proven successful in the past.

With England, the 2003 champions, also reaching the semi-finals, it appears that the dominant rugby powerhouses will continue to assert their dominance in this year’s Rugby World Cup. Only Argentina has the potential to disrupt this pattern of traditional winners.
