In Dublin, Ireland achieved their third bonus-point victory in the Six Nations campaign by defeating Wales 31-7 at the Aviva Stadium. This win marked their 18th consecutive home victory, further solidifying their grand slam ambitions.

The first half was dominated by the hosts, who managed to secure a 17-0 lead at halftime with tries from Dan Sheehan and James Lowe. However, a penalty try for Wales and a yellow card for Tadhg Beirne of Ireland early in the second half added some drama to the match.

Despite a more scrappy performance in the second half, Ireland managed to maintain their lead until Ciaran Frawley scored a try in his impressive first start, followed by Beirne contributing the bonus-point try at the end of the match. This defeat marked Wales’ 10th loss in their last 11 Six Nations games.

“You’re always chasing an immaculate performance but we know we’re not going to do that every time… You don’t turn your nose up at five points in this competition,” stated Ireland captain Peter O’Mahony in a pitchside interview.

Although the high penalty count and a less polished second half may have disappointed coach Andy Farrell, Ireland’s initial performance showcased their rapid ball movement and strong defensive strategy.

Despite Wales maintaining a high defensive line for the first 20 minutes, Ireland’s persistence paid off with a try from Sheehan. Lowe later scored the second try with an assist from Calvin Nash, extending their lead in the game.

Wales’ performance in Dublin was marred by conceding eight penalties within the first 27 minutes, in contrast to their disciplined display against England. Ireland, on the other hand, ended up conceding 13 penalties throughout the match, slightly more than Wales with a total of 12.

The Welsh team managed to put some pressure on Ireland’s defense before and after halftime, resulting in a penalty try and a sin bin for Beirne. Despite this setback, Ireland maintained control even with 14 men on the field.

Although Ireland had a Bundee Aki try disallowed, Frawley secured the crucial try seven minutes later. The bonus point seemed out of reach when James Ryan received a yellow card, but Beirne’s late try sealed the victory.

“I think the scoreline probably doesn’t reflect it but Ireland outmuscled us and that’s probably the difference between the two sides at the moment,” commented Wales coach Warren Gatland on the match.

Next, Ireland faces England before their potential grand slam decider against Scotland. Meanwhile, Wales will have home games against France and Italy, with the latter possibly determining the wooden spoon recipient.
