(Reuters) – Italy wing Louis Lynagh made a cheeky remark about potentially retiring from international rugby following a sensational debut where he scored a try to help Italy secure a thrilling 31-29 victory over Scotland. This victory marked Italy’s first home win in the Six Nations since 2013. Speaking to ITV, Lynagh expressed his disbelief and joy, stating, “I don’t have any words right now – one try and one win, I might retire!”

Originally born in Italy but having represented England at junior levels in the past, the 23-year-old Lynagh is the son of former Australia rugby legend Michael Lynagh. He mentioned that he will heed his father’s advice, emphasizing the importance of celebrating the win but also staying focused and ready for the next challenge.

Lynagh, who was solid in defense throughout the game, capitalized on an opportunity in the second half when flyhalf Paolo Garbisi delivered a superb grubber kick, allowing the winger to outpace the defenders and touch down for a crucial try. Reflecting on the moment, Lynagh shared, “It’s an amazing thing that we have been working towards all week, there was something in the air and I felt like we could win.”

Expressing gratitude towards his family, Lynagh acknowledged the emotional impact of the victory on his loved ones, saying, “Looking at them right now – Dad is almost in tears; my grandad in Treviso will be over the moon, they will be so happy and I can’t wait to celebrate with them. This is one of the best moments of my life.”

Italy’s head coach Gonzalo Quesada credited the victory to the team’s strong defensive effort and sees it as a stepping stone for greater achievements. With a final Six Nations matchup against Wales on the horizon, Quesada highlighted the team’s growth and resilience, stating, “It’s a good day for this team and it was a tough game. I think we managed to become good in the second half. It’s a special day though, it’s a step in the growth of the team.”

Reflecting on Italy’s performance, Quesada emphasized the importance of consistency in defense, pointing out that even in previous challenging matches like the one against Ireland, the team showed dedication and determination. He praised the players for their hard work and dedication, stating, “We have created a special group who have worked tirelessly.”

Overall, the victory against Scotland marked a significant achievement for Italy in the Six Nations tournament, providing a boost of confidence and motivation for the team as they prepare to face Wales in their final match. With Lynagh’s impactful debut and the team’s strong defensive display, Italy aims to build on this success and continue their progress in international rugby.
