South Africa hooker Bongi Mbonambi is being investigated by his own camp for allegations of verbal abuse towards England flanker Tom Curry during the Rugby World Cup semi-final in Paris. Video and audio footage shared on social media captured Curry complaining to referee Ben O’Keeffe during the first half of the match. Although no action was taken at the time, Curry confirmed the incident when questioned by reporters, but chose not to disclose the specifics of the alleged abuse.

A statement from SA Rugby states, “We are aware of the allegation, which we take very seriously, and are reviewing the available evidence. We will engage with Bongi if anything is found to substantiate the claim.” Mbonambi took over as captain for the Springboks after Siya Kolisi was substituted in the second half, guiding the team to a tense 16-15 victory and securing a place in the final against New Zealand in the French capital next week.
