(Reuters) – The Auckland Blues got off to a strong start in the new Super Rugby season with a 34-10 victory over the Fijian Drua at Whangarei Stadium. Hoskins Sotutu’s pair of first-half tries helped the Blues secure a bonus point in the win on Saturday.

Despite Stephen Perofeta’s struggles with kicking, the Blues managed to score five tries in the first 40 minutes under coach Vern Cotter’s guidance. Perofeta only converted two of the six tries due to windy conditions, but it did not impact the outcome of the match.

Blues captain Dalton Papali’i acknowledged the team’s performance, stating, “We had some moments where we performed but there were some moments where we were a bit scratchy. At the end of the day we know the Drua’s going to bring it all.”

Sotutu opened the scoring for the Blues early on by crossing the line from close range. Caleb Clarke extended the lead with a try from two meters out, followed by Zarn Sullivan adding another try for Auckland.

Papali’i contributed with a try before Sotutu capitalized on a mistake by the Drua’s defence to score his second try. Ratu Rotuisolia managed to score for the Drua early in the second half, but Sullivan sealed the Blues’ win with another try later in the game.

“They play such a good style of footie that you’ve got to be on all game,” Papali’i said of the Drua’s performance. The Auckland Blues put on a dominant display to start the season on a high note.

Despite some moments of uncertainty, the Blues maintained control and executed their game plan effectively. The Drua fought hard but could not match the Blues’ level of play throughout the match.

The Auckland Blues’ strong performance in their opening game sets a positive tone for the rest of the Super Rugby campaign. With key players like Sotutu and Sullivan making significant contributions, the team looks poised for success in the upcoming matches.

The Drua put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell short against the Blues’ superior firepower and execution. Coach Cotter will be pleased with the team’s performance and will look to build on this win going forward in the season.
