(Reuters) – Former Welsh fullback Leigh Halfpenny has signed a one-year deal with the Canterbury Crusaders, the reigning champions of Super Rugby Pacific, for the 2024 season. This move comes after Halfpenny announced his retirement from international rugby following his participation in the World Cup for the third time.
With regular kicker Richie Mo’unga leaving the Crusaders to play for Japanese club Toshiba Brave Lions next season, the 34-year-old Halfpenny will provide maturity and world-class place-kicking skills to the team based in Christchurch.
In a news release, Halfpenny expressed his excitement for joining the Crusaders and mentioned that he has always been a fan of the team. He also mentioned feeling at home in New Zealand and praised the passionate rugby culture there.
Despite playing most of his 105 test matches for Wales and the British and Irish Lions as a fullback, Halfpenny stated that he is open to switching to flyhalf if needed. He expressed his happiness playing at fullback but mentioned being open to the challenge of playing at flyhalf if given the opportunity.
The Crusaders will begin their pursuit of a third consecutive Super Rugby Pacific title on February 23, 2024, when they face the Waikato Chiefs in Hamilton. This match will be a rematch of last year’s final.
