In London, a Russian regional governor announced on Wednesday that he had ordered the reconstruction of nine houses in a village that was unintentionally bombed by a Russian warplane. The incident occurred on Tuesday, and the defense ministry quoted by the state news agency RIA reported an “abnormal discharge of aircraft ammunition” over the village of Petropavlovka in the southern region of Voronezh.
Governor Alexander Gusev stated that the nine houses would be rebuilt as soon as possible, and there was also damage to a local school, an arts center, and an administrative building. Although no one was killed, four people were treated for minor injuries and residents had access to psychological support.
Additionally, five cars and a tractor were damaged, and the owners would receive compensation. “Not a single resident will be left without help, we will support everyone as much as possible,” Gusev assured.
Authorities did not specify the cause of the incident. While the damage was minimal, it was an embarrassing misstep for Russia’s military and occurred during a period of high alert in its southern regions near the Ukraine border.
During the New Year period, Russia conducted significant missile and drone strikes on Ukraine, the most intense since the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Furthermore, Ukraine’s deadliest cross-border attack of the war killed 25 people in Belgorod, near the border, officials disclosed.
