KYIV (Reuters) – Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and surrounding area were targeted by Russia in a missile attack on Saturday, marking the first time in weeks that Kyiv had been attacked. In addition to the missile attack, drones were used to bomb the eastern and southern regions of the country, according to Ukrainian officials.
The head of the Kyiv city military administration, Serhiy Popko, reported that a Russian ballistic missile was fired towards the capital at around 8:00 a.m. local time. He stated that the missile was intercepted and shot down by Ukrainian air defenders before it could reach Kyiv.
Popko also stated that there were no casualties or significant damage in the capital, but the central Kyiv region experienced damage to five private houses and several commercial buildings. Two Russian missiles struck a field between settlements in the area, according to regional governor Ruslan Kravchenko.
Ukraine’s air defenses were also successful in intercepting 19 out of 31 Iranian-made “Shahed” drones launched by Russian forces in attacks on the southern and eastern regions overnight, as reported by the air force.
In the southern region, governor Oleh Kiper reported that missiles and drones targeted the area on Friday evening and overnight, resulting in three injuries and damage to port infrastructure facilities. Details on the extent of the damage were not provided.
Russia’s intensified bombardment of Ukraine’s ports and grain infrastructure has been ongoing since July, when Moscow withdrew from the Black Sea Grain Initiative, a wartime agreement that facilitated Ukraine’s exports to countries facing food shortages.
