(Reuters) – Russian forces launched a heavy artillery attack on the center of the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson on Friday, resulting in injuries to multiple individuals and significant damage to at least 10 buildings, according to a senior local official and emergency workers.
Photographs posted on social media platforms vividly depict the aftermath of the attack, with three distinct locations strewn with piles of debris and rubble.
Head of the city’s military administration, Roman Mrochko, confirmed that several people sustained injuries, with one currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital. He further stated that a minimum of 10 buildings had suffered extensive damage.
“In the evening, the entire city experienced intense tremors,” noted Ukraine’s Emergency Services through their Telegram channel. “The enemy deliberately targeted the heart of Kherson.”
The message conveyed that emergency workers successfully rescued two elderly women trapped inside a building and managed to bring a fire under control within an area heavily affected by rubble.
Kherson was taken over by Russian forces during the initial stages of the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. However, they subsequently withdrew from the city and the western bank of the Dnipro River towards the end of last year. Presently, they regularly deploy artillery strikes on these regions from positions located on the eastern bank.
