(Reuters) – Alexei Navalny, a jailed critic of the Kremlin, has alleged that he has been poisoned, assaulted, and denied proper medical care. However, he revealed that he now faces a new challenge of being forced to listen to a pro-Putin pop singer every morning at 5:00 am. Navalny, who is 47 years old, gained prominence by criticizing President Vladimir Putin’s elite and making allegations of widespread corruption. He is currently being held in a jail located about 60 km north of the Arctic Circle.

Navalny has been sentenced to stay in prison until he is 74 on what he claims are trumped-up charges designed to keep him out of politics. He stated that his morning routine now involves listening to the Russian national anthem followed by a patriotic song called “I am Russian,” performed by a pro-Putin singer known as “Shaman.”

Shaman, whose real name is Yaroslav Dronov, has become a well-known figure on state TV due to his songs promoting patriotism and is one of the celebrities openly endorsing Putin’s bid for re-election in March. His signature song, “I am Russian,” emphasizes the strength and resilience of Russians and their heritage. The 32-year-old singer sparked controversy in November when he simulated setting off a nuclear bomb during a concert broadcast on state TV.

In a message shared through his allies, Navalny described the surreal nature of his morning routine, commenting on how Shaman had become Putin’s main singer. He also expressed his curiosity about the song but had no way to listen to it while in prison. Now, he is being forced to hear “I am Russian” every day at 5:00 am alongside the Russian national anthem.

Navalny pointed out the irony of the situation, noting that the state propaganda previously highlighted his participation in nationalistic marches, and now he is being played an ultra-nationalist pop song for “educational purposes.” He added a touch of humor, questioning whether the situation can be classified as post-irony or meta-irony.
