KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Christina Liew, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment for Sabah, believes that the region, particularly its capital Kota Kinabalu, has the potential to flourish in the fields of medical wellness tourism and education. Liew highlights the unique combination of natural attractions and modern medical facilities that Sabah has to offer. Additionally, she emphasizes that visitors will find more value for their money here compared to other parts of the world.
According to Liew, medical wellness treatments in Sabah are relatively affordable compared to elsewhere. Sabah’s healthcare system also covers a wide range of specialties, making it an attractive destination for medical tourists. Liew adds that after receiving their treatments, visitors can enjoy their recovery in the picturesque and peaceful environment of Sabah, famous for its stunning natural landscapes including lush rainforests and beautiful islands.
Liew expressed these views during a dinner reception held by Datuk Seri Dr Mike Chan, the founder of European Wellness Academy (Asia-Pacific), and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Michelle Wong at their residence in Alamesra Desa Saujana on August 6. The event was attended by doctors, specialists, and international guests from various countries, including the United States, Japan, India, Poland, Greece, Russia, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, the Middle East, and Africa.
The Minister commended Dr Chan, Dr Wong, and their team for the successful Summer Seminar hosted by the academy. Liew stated her eagerness to collaborate closely with the academy and other local medical wellness communities in Sabah to establish the state as a preferred destination for healthcare and medical tourism.
During his speech, Dr Chan expressed his gratitude for Liew’s support and emphasized the need to promote wellness and medical tourism in Sabah. Having spent the prime years of his life in Germany, Switzerland, and Greece, Dr Chan believes that now is the opportune time to focus on this sector in Sabah.
