KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s victory over the Sulu claimants is the beginning of new opportunities, says Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup.

Describing it as a Malaysia and Sabah Day gift, the Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) president said it is “an affirmation of our identity, culture, and future as proud Malaysians”.

“As Sabah and Malaysia Day coincide, this victory is a special gift that enhances the festivities, reminding us of the strength found in togetherness,” he said in a statement.

The Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister added that PBRS vows to continue its support for all measures that ensure the safety and interests of the people of Sabah and Malaysia at large.

Kurup was commenting on the final landmark judgment by the Supreme Court of the Netherlands in dismissing the appeal filed by the Sulu claimants, which he said has ushered in an era of renewed hope and affirmation for the sovereignty of Sabah.

“For years, the claims of the Sulu group had cast a shadow over the rights and identity of Sabahans, challenging the very essence of what it means to be part of this great nation.

“However, this landmark decision serves not only as a legal victory but as a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of Sabah’s sovereignty within Malaysia.

“It casts aside the unfounded claims that have loomed over the state, reinforcing the undeniable truth that Sabah is and will always be an integral part of Malaysia,” he said.

In the spirit of unity and celebration, PBRS thanked the unity government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the unwavering commitment and tireless efforts in addressing the external challenges faced by our beloved state have been commendable.

“This victory highlights the government’s seriousness in resolving such matters and protecting the interests of the people.

“Our thanks also go to those who stood firm in defending the sovereignty of Sabah within Malaysia. Today, we celebrate not just a court ruling but the spirit of Malaysia, united and strong, ready to embrace the future with optimism and pride,” he said.
