TRIPOLI, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) – Schools in the devastated eastern city of Derna have reopened following deadly floods that occurred a few weeks ago, resulting in numerous casualties and extensive destruction.
The Education Ministry of Libya has announced that students whose schools were damaged or destroyed during the floods will be accommodated in other schools.
Additionally, the ministry has arranged psychosocial support for students affected by the floods, and has called upon private schools in Derna to admit affected students without charge.
A powerful Mediterranean storm named Daniel unleashed the most severe and devastating floods witnessed in Libya in decades on September 10. The floods led to thousands of fatalities and disappearances.
The storm also caused substantial damage to approximately 70% of the region’s infrastructure, including 114 schools located in 15 cities and towns affected by the floods.
Just recently, Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah issued a directive to allocate around 93 million Libyan dinars (equivalent to roughly 19 million U.S. dollars) for the restoration of schools damaged in the floods in eastern Libya.
