WASHINGTON: The Biden administration and major consumer tech players launched a nationwide cybersecurity certification and labeling program. The initiative aims to help consumers choose secure smart devices.
Officials compared it to the Energy Star program for rating appliance energy efficiency. The program, called the US Cyber Trust Mark, will be overseen by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
“It will allow Americans to confidently identify cybersecure devices,” said deputy national security adviser Anne Neuberger. Participants include Amazon, Best Buy, Google, LG, Logitech, and Samsung.
Devices meeting government cybersecurity requirements for baby monitors, cameras, fitness trackers, TVs, refrigerators, and climate control systems will carry the “Cyber Trust” label by next year.
FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said the mark will give consumers “peace of mind” and manufacturers benefits. Products must adhere to National Institute of Standards and Technology criteria to qualify.
The FCC is launching a rule-making process, setting standards and requesting public input. Participating devices will carry logos and QR codes for security updates.
The Consumer Technology Association expects certification-ready products at CES 2024. The Biden administration anticipates yearly re-certification.
Consumer Reports’ Justin Brookman welcomed the proposal but cautioned that “a long road remains.” The label is intended to encourage competition and commitment to security and privacy.
The initiative was announced in October after a meeting between the White House and tech industry representatives.
The rise of smart devices coincides with a surge in cybercrime. Insecure devices provide easy access for intruders, as highlighted by a recent report from Bitdefender and NetGear.
Providers often fail to patch software and update devices promptly. Cyber Mark standards will indicate which devices prioritize security updates and protect privacy. Additionally, it will inform consumers about devices equipped to detect intrusions.
