On Monday (Feb 5), Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah officially declared Klang as a royal city. The Ruler announced that Klang’s status as a city had taken effect on Nov 23, 2023. As a result, Klang’s custodian agency will now be known as Majlis Bandaraya Diraja Klang (MBDK).
Datin Paduka Noraini Roslan, who previously served as MPK president, was also declared as the first mayor of the royal city. In his address, Sultan Sharafuddin urged MBDK to be diligent and efficient in their duties, emphasizing the importance of taking immediate action without waiting for complaints to be made.
The Ruler also mentioned the issue of flooding in Klang and urged the newly appointed mayor and city councillors to take the necessary measures to address the problem. He stressed the importance of implementing a proper plan, taking into account Klang’s location at the Sungai Kelang estuary. Sultan Sharafuddin also advised seeking the opinions of experts to ensure that the plans to prevent flooding are carried out effectively.
In addition, the Ruler reiterated the recommendation for half of the city’s councillors to be professionals with expertise in various fields related to city development.
