DAKAR (Reuters) – Senegal has implemented internet restrictions starting Monday due to the proliferation of “hateful messages” on social media, according to a statement by the communications minister.
The decision comes after opposition leader Ousmane Sonko was charged with plotting an insurrection, criminal conspiracy, and other offenses on Saturday. Sonko’s supporters are outraged by the possibility that his conviction could prevent him from running in the presidential election scheduled next year.
“Telephone operators are obligated to adhere to the specified requirements,” stated communications minister Moussa Bocar Thiam.
