PETALING JAYA: The Serdang Heart Centre has run into trouble again, about over a month after repairs were done to its four non-functional operating theatres and surgery rooms.

Sources said the new wing’s operating theatres had to be closed for three weeks from July 22 (Monday).

Surgeries have also ground to a halt due to the issue.

“There were multiple electrical issues. We had to close down the new wing’s operating theatres for three weeks for inspection and repairs,” said a source.

“We are moving back to the old building,” added the source.

This has affected some 50 patients who are waiting for heart surgery.

“There are another 1,000 on the waiting list in the clinic,” said the source.

At that time, only one of the operating theatres in the hospital’s old building was functioning, leaving a long list of patients on the waiting list.

The 19-month-old cardiac facility’s four OTs had to be shut down because of maintenance problems, particularly air-conditioning issues, leaving the hospital with only one functioning OT in its old building.

On June 7, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said three out of the four non-functioning operating theatres in the Serdang Heart Centre have been working since June 5.

“On the first day, two adults and two children underwent successful procedures.

“This was followed by three adults and two children on the second day,” he said in a Facebook post on Friday (June 7).

“All issues related to the temperature and humidity have been resolved,” he added.

The RM546mil new facility began operations in December 2022 and was aimed at speeding up treatment and shortening the waiting period for angiogram treatments.

It is one of the country’s primary cardiology centres, receiving referrals from all over the nation.
