KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s power grid is expected to be stabilised further following the recent granting of approval to install a gas-powered generator plant, says Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB).

The utility company’s Chief Executive Officer Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said that SESB was given the green light to proceed with the project to increase the reserve capacity of Sabah’s grid.

He said in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 24) that SESB received their Letter of Notification (LoN) from the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) to start the supply and installation of turbine gas generators with a 94MW capacity.

Mohd Yaakob then said that installation work starts this month and is scheduled for completion in June 2025.

“This is part of the short term initiatives that have to be taken according to the Supply Development Plan which has been approved by the Sabah Energy Council,” he said.

Yaakob said the location of this project is in Kimanis and the gas generator plant will be connected to the Sabah grid system via injection points at the Langat main incoming substation.

“The implementation of this fast track project is critical for the stability and addition to the power supply in Sabah,” he added.
