SERDANG: Umno’s poor performance in the recent six state elections can be attributed to several issues, according to Umno vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
Khaled stated that there were various challenges faced by Umno leading up to the elections, including supporters who were not accustomed to the party working with a coalition they once opposed.
He also mentioned that the government’s efforts had not yet fully impacted the public, which further affected the election results.
Speaking to reporters after officiating the National Food Security Conference 2023 at Universiti Putra Malaysia on Tuesday (Aug 15), Khaled responded to calls for party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to step down. He urged for a proper post-mortem to be conducted to determine the underlying causes.
He emphasized the need for everyone to remain calm before carrying out the post-mortem, as emotions were currently high.
Umno has faced calls for Ahmad Zahid’s resignation as party president following their poor performance in Saturday’s state polls, where they only managed to secure 19 out of the 108 seats they contested. Notably, they lost all seats in Terengganu and Kedah, won only two in Penang and Selangor, and one in Kelantan. However, they fared better in Negri Sembilan, securing 14 seats.
