PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian shuttlers settled for bronze in the World Junior Championships mixed team event after being defeated 0-3 by China in the semi-finals in Spokane, the United States on Friday (Sept 29).
In the opening match, the mixed doubles pair of Low Han Chen and Chan Wen Tse lost with a score of 11-21, 16-21 against Liao Pinyi and Zhang Jiahan.
Eogene Ewe attempted to level the match for Malaysia in the men’s singles, but was defeated with a score of 17-21, 14-21 by Hu Zhean.
In the women’s singles, Siti Zulaikha Azmi put up a strong fight against Xu Wenjing in an attempt to salvage the match, but her efforts were not enough and she lost with a score of 17-21, 18-21.
Despite the defeat, the Malaysian players can still be proud of winning Malaysia’s first medal in the mixed team event since 2017.
The players will now shift their focus to the individual events which will take place from Oct 2-8.
Meanwhile, China will face Indonesia in the final on Saturday (Sept 30).
