It is expected for the RM3mil expansion of SJKT Subramaniya Barathee in George Town to be completed next month. The 72-year-old school will have 15 classrooms and other activity rooms. J. Govindasamy, the school board chairman, shared that the new rooms, which include a computer lab, workshop, virtual reality studio, as well as music and art room, will be available for use by mid-2024. In addition, there will also be an extra room equipped with a kitchen and small playground for preschool children.

The current building, built in 2014 after the school’s relocation to Gelugor, contains only nine classrooms. Govindasamy pointed out that in 2015, the school only had 208 pupils, but the number has doubled to 425 this year, necessitating the need for 15 classrooms to accommodate all the pupils. Of the RM3mil needed for the expansion project, RM800,000 was received from the Education Ministry. Another RM500,000 was collected in a fundraising dinner and another RM500,000 from another event. However, the school is still short of RM1.2mil.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, who inspected the progress of the expansion work earlier, has allocated an additional RM100,000 for the school.
