According to the Ministry of Finance, Slovenia’s central government deficit increased to 2.3 billion euros or 3.7 percent of GDP in 2023, compared to 1.4 billion euros or 2.4 percent of GDP in 2022.
The ministry attributed the rise in deficit to the high government spending on energy subsidies to alleviate the impact of surging energy costs on the population, as well as state financial assistance to individuals and companies affected by the unprecedented floods in August.
It reported that budget income grew by 5.5 percent to 13 billion euros last year, while budget spending increased by 12 percent to 15.4 billion euros.
Slovenia recently raised 1.5 billion euros through a 10-year bond issue and is anticipated to issue an additional 3.2 billion euros in debt by the year-end to finance the country’s budgetary requirements.
