In conjunction with the upcoming launch of its new line of Samsung Galaxy S24 smartphones, the South Korean manufacturer has revealed that these new models will receive seven years of operating system updates. This move follows a trend started by other manufacturers, with the goal of extending the life of handsets and reducing electronic waste.
Those who will own a Samsung Galaxy S24 can look forward to receiving operating system updates for a period of seven years. This means that their device will remain current in terms of performance, functionality, and security.
Samsung is following in the footsteps of Google and Apple, who have already made the same commitment for their latest Pixel and iPhone models. These phones will continue to receive Android and iOS updates seven years after their release. Additionally, important security updates can also be issued at a later date if needed.
Typically, smartphone updates rarely exceed four or five years, which quickly renders them obsolete or incompatible with certain applications. This period can be even shorter for lower-end models. By extending the duration of their device updates, these manufacturers also aim to have a positive impact on the environment. The idea is to use smartphones for as long as possible and, as a result, reduce the production of electronic waste in the years to come.
Extending the duration of operating system updates is not the only recent decision made by manufacturers to protect the environment. Samsung, Google, Motorola, and Nokia have collaborated with iFixit to offer repair kits for most of their latest models. Similarly, Apple provides a similar service called Self Service Repair. The intention is to be able to replace faulty parts at a reduced cost, rather than having to purchase a new handset when a fault occurs. – AFP Relaxnews
