(Reuters) – Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes that genuine opinions and real emotional responses from coaches are beneficial for the sport, despite being charged by the English FA for his comments on refereeing. Arteta’s criticism stemmed from the video assistant referee’s decision not to overturn Anthony Gordon’s goal in Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Nov. 4, which he labeled an embarrassment and a disgrace.

Arteta expressed his viewpoint to reporters in London ahead of Saturday’s game at Brentford, stating, “I have been here 20 years and I have supported the league, the players, the referees and I have promoted the game always in the best possible manner. And I expect that if we want to continue to do that you have to give your opinion.”

He emphasized the importance of reacting to the game with emotion and genuine opinions, and criticized the idea of muting players and coaches during a match. Arteta also called for clear instructions from the FA regarding the behavior of players and coaches, suggesting that specific guidelines would allow him to best comply.

He added, “What do we expect from each other? … They tell me these three things are going to help, believe me, I will try my best to help. But it has to be detailed.”

Arteta further explained that he had communicated his perspective on the incident to the FA and urged for improved communication between referees, managers, officials, and all involved in the sport in order to elevate the game.

Arsenal, currently one point behind leaders Manchester City, are set to face 11th-placed Brentford on Saturday.
