South Korea made a name for themselves in the Asian Cup for their ability to stage comebacks, which earned them the nickname of playing ‘zombie football’. This was due to their consistent ability to score late goals and revive their chances of winning, even when they appeared to be on the brink of defeat. However, their performance in the semi-final proved to be their downfall.

The team had a string of late comebacks, scoring goals after the 90th minute in four consecutive matches, including the last 16 and quarter-finals. These late strikes pushed matches against Saudi Arabia and Australia into extra time. However, in the semi-final, they were defeated by Jordan with a score of 2-0, marking Jordan’s first advance to the final in the history of the tournament.

South Korea, with many Europe-based players, initially entered the tournament as one of the favorites. Led by Son Heung-min, they were not able to live up to expectations, ending their 64-year trophy drought with a disappointing performance in the semi-final.

Son expressed his regret and apologized to the team’s supporters, acknowledging their mistakes and expressing sorrow for the result. The fatigue from playing extra time twice in previous matches worked against South Korea, and Jordan was able to take advantage of it.

Despite their talent, South Korea’s team appeared to be less cohesive, conceding in every game and relying on individual moments of brilliance in their attack. Their resilience and stamina, which had brought them to the semi-final, were not enough to overcome Jordan’s strong defensive strategy.

Furthermore, Son was unable to make an impact, finishing the tournament without scoring a goal from open play. Nevertheless, he acknowledged the tough competition and the rising level of Asian football.

Coach Juergen Klinsmann, despite being an unpopular appointment, did not offer to resign despite criticism and pressure. He faced scrutiny for his demeanor on the sidelines and was criticized for appearing to smile while things were not going well for the team.

After the defeat, Klinsmann acknowledged the disappointment and anger, but also emphasized the need to accept the reasons behind the loss. He explained that it is normal for him to congratulate the opposing team and their coach when they perform better, as a sign of respect.

Ultimately, South Korea’s journey in the Asian Cup came to a disappointing end, prompting reflection and analysis of their performance and the future direction of the team.
