(Reuters) – Barcelona women’s captain and two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas will have knee surgery, her club announced on Tuesday.
The Spain forward had to withdraw from the national team training camp in Madrid last month due to a knee injury, which also prevented her from playing in recent matches with Barcelona.
“Barcelona women’s football star Alexia Putellas is undergoing an arthroscopy on her left knee on Wednesday, December 27,” the club said.
“The club will issue an official medical statement once the operation is complete.”
Putellas, 29, was unable to compete in the 2022 European Championship due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury, but she was part of Spain’s victorious World Cup squad this year.
